Our group is concerned with the ketogenic diet and ancestral health in the context of promoting holistic health and longevity. The main objective of this group is to provide additional support to anyone looking to embark on a keto journey. The group admins comprise seasoned keto evangelists, qualified nutritionists and medical professionals.

The Ketogenic Diet

The Ketogenic Diet is one which promotes ketosis: a state where the body uses fat as the main energy source instead of carbs, essentially by converting fat (dietary or stored) into ketone bodies.

The state of ketosis can be achieved in several ways:

  1. Diet (nutritional ketosis)
  2. Fasting (fasting ketosis)
  3. The consumption of exogenous ketones
  4. Vigorous exercise.

The Ketogenic Diet has become increasingly popular in recent years as it can provide a multitude of health and longevity benefits such as:

  1. Better control over appetite and hunger
  2. Increased cognitive ability
  3. Weight loss
  4. Improved lipid profile: Triglycerides and HDL cholesterol*
  5. Optimisation of blood sugar and insulin
  6. Potential treatment and cure for type 1&2 diabetes
  7. Potential cancer prevention and treatment

Unfortunately, as popularity grows, there is a lot of misinformation creeping into the space and it’s not uncommon for people to go about it in the wrong way.

Pertaining to the UAE, there is great potential for the ketogenic to provide a serious intervention to the issues of obesity & type 2 diabetes without the need for pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately, there aren’t many medical practitioners in the UAE who support the diet and it’s very difficult to get hold of some of the tool, products and produce required to support. 

Epigenetics and Ancestral Health

For the most part, we have been educated to believe that we’re stuck with the genes we inherited from our parents. Whilst that’s true there’s a new emerging science coming through the ranks called epigenetics which teaches us that environmental factors also come into play.

This means that while we may be carriers of familial genes that would increase our chances of being obese or of developing cancer, those genes will not express themselves unless we turn them on. We hold the power to switch certain genes on and off through the lifestyle choices we make.

In the context of “nature versus nurture:, the lifestyle choices are the “nurture” whilst the genome we were gifted from our parents is the “nature”.

As you can imagine, epigenetics is huge from a holistically wellness perspective. Essentially, it means that by making healthy, informed lifestyle choices, we all have the power to change our fates.

And the beauty is in the simplicity. Eat real, whole foods, move our bodies, get enough exposure to sunshine and nature, maintain metabolic flexibility (being able to move in and out of ketosis), spend time with people and get good quality sleep.

These are primal choices!

These are what we were designed to do, and our genes know that.  The closer we come to making these choices consistently, the closer we come to living the optimal expression of health and longevity we evolved to be… and the further we move from them (modern lifestyle) the closer we move to metabolic disease (heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity).

Whilst our primary focus will be the ketogenic diet, we will cover all of the key ‘tool’ required for promoting a sustained, healthy active and long life (keto, paleo, movement, sleep, stress management).

Why listen to us

We’re not medical professionals or qualified nutritionists (yet) but we have been in this space devouring knowledge for many years. We all have our own personal success stories and we have been helping people on their wellness journeys for time.

That said, we are qualified. Bronwyn is a certified Raw Nutritionist and is studying to become a certified Primal Health Coach. Lee holds two certifications in nutrition, is a BSc (Hons) graduate and working towards a Masters in Clinical Nutrition with Aberdeen University in the UK.

What’s most important, though, is that we’re open minded, humble people. We’re always learning and try our best to keep our egos in check. This isn’t about who’s right or wrong: it’s about building a positive, independent community that can help each and everyone one flourish J 

Our principles:

  1. The benefits of keto, primal and paleo are wide ranging so people may be using it for different reasons.
  2. Following a low carb diet is the means, not the end: the end goal is to promote the state of nutritional ketosis.
  3. Everyone is different so there are no hard and fast rules about macro ratios – it’s good to experiment and group members are encouraged to share their results.
  4. Testing is good as if you don’t measure it, you don’t know it.
  5. We encourage members to build a meal plan comprising wholefoods – our overall interest is long-term health and longevity. Eating cheese sticks, wrapped in bacon and deep fried in canola oil may keep you in ketosis but it will not be well received J
  6. We love recipes, please share.

Testing, Negative Responses & Cholesterol*

Not everyone responds well to the diet and in particular, many people (around 30%) experience super-high elevated cholesterol. Whilst the jury is still out on whether this is, in fact, a bad thing, it’s wise to keep track of certain bio markers when starting out.

We recommend you get the following bio markers checked before you start and about a month in:

  • Fasting blood glucose
  • Cholesterol
  • CRP
  • Hemoglobin A1C
  • Uric Acid
  • Vitamin D
  • Thyroid Function
  • Micronutrients
  • Teststerone
