Almonds, pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries make for a great combination of protein, fat and carbs for a quick and easy power snack to fend off the munchies!

Pound for pound, almonds provide just about the best protein to calorie ratio of all nuts and they are associated with all sorts of health benefits such as helping to reduce the risk of heart attack, lowering bad cholesterol and even improving brain function.

Pumpkin seeds are also in the premier league when it comes protein to calorie ratio and outperforms pretty much all of its rival seeds. Adding dried cranberries provides a hit of carbohydrate to increase energy levels so all in all this is a pretty good all round power snack.

Tips & alternatives

The universe may well have led you to believe that you can eat as much healthy food as you like but in reality, if you’re trying to lose weight, you need to be very careful with healthy, calorie dense snacks such as this one. 15g of pumpkin seeds provides 94 kcal so go overboard and you could easily eliminate any calorie deficit that you have planned. It is highly recommended that you weigh foods like this to ensure you keep within your calorie and macronutrient targets.

Also, dried cranberries are great but as with all fruits, dried and fresh, they fall at the upper end of the GI scale meaning they quickly raise blood sugar and don’t provide the same slow energy release as complex carbs. This means that this snack won’t keep you as full for the same length of time as something like sweet potatoes and you may have a craving for more sugar. Essentially, enjoy this as it really is awesome but just go easy.
